Yes, ants can damage your home in New Zealand. While not all ant species cause structural damage, some, like carpenter ants, can weaken wooden structures by excavating wood to build their nests. Other common species, such as Argentine ants and white-footed ants, can contaminate food, spread bacteria, and create unsightly trails. Even if the ants themselves don’t cause direct damage, their presence can lead to secondary issues, such as attracting other pests or causing electrical problems by nesting in appliances. Professional pest control can help identify the type of ant infestation and prevent potential damage to your home.

Signs of an ant infestation include seeing large numbers of ants inside your home, especially near food sources or water. You might also notice ant trails leading to and from their nest, small piles of dirt or wood shavings, and even rustling sounds within walls. Some species, like carpenter ants, may leave behind damaged wood. If you suspect an infestation, it’s important to contact a professional pest control service to assess the situation and provide effective treatment.

Preventing ant infestations involves maintaining good sanitation practices, such as keeping food in sealed containers, cleaning up spills immediately, and regularly taking out the trash. Seal any cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and the foundation of your home to block entry points. Additionally, eliminate sources of moisture, as ants are attracted to water. Regular inspections and treatments by a professional pest control service can also help keep your home ant-free.

COMMON ANTS

SOUTHERN ANT

APPEARANCE

3–4 millimetres long, and can range in colour from orange with darker markings to entirely black.

LIFESTYLE

Southern ant colonies consist of multiple castes, including queens, males, and workers. The queen’s primary role is to reproduce, while workers are responsible for foraging, nest maintenance, and caring for the brood. Colonies can range in size from a few thousand to tens of thousands of ants.

HABITS

This is, by far, the most common native ant species in New Zealand. The southern ant can survive in most habitats such as the forests, grassland, gardens or rotting logs.

STRIATED ANT

APPEARANCE

On average, a Striated Ant measures 7mm – 9mm in length and has a striated head and body marked with lines.

LIFESTYLE

Striated ants reproduce through nuptial flights, where winged males and females leave the nest to mate. After mating, males die, and fertilised females land to start new colonies. Queens shed their wings and begin laying eggs to establish new colonies.

HABITS

They can also survive in multiple habitats. There is evidence that striated ants capture live snails and devour them for food.

WHITE-FOOTED ANT

APPEARANCE

On average, a White-footed ant measures 3mm – 3.4mm in length and has a brown coloration with a subtle yellow cast.black to brownish-black ant with yellowish-white feet.

LIFESTYLE

White-footed ant colonies are large and can contain tens of thousands of individuals. These colonies have multiple queens (polygynous) and are structured with workers, males, and queens. The presence of numerous queens allows for rapid colony expansion and resilience.

HABITS

You might have noticed white trails of these ants on your wall. They are common in urban areas and can be found in wall voids, behind insulation, and around damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

ARGENTINE ANT

APPEARANCE

On average, a Argentine ant measures
2mm – 3mm in length and has a uniform honey-brown colour.

LIFESTYLE

Argentine ant colonies are large, with thousands to hundreds of thousands of individuals. These colonies have multiple queens (polygynous) and no clear boundaries between them, forming what is known as a “supercolony.” This structure allows for efficient resource sharing and colony expansion.

HABITS

These brown ants prefer to live in open and urban areas as opposed to dense forests. They build huge colonies and feed on a wide range of food, including the food safely hidden away in your pantry.
